We have a fantastic 5-day tour all planned out for you.
Day 1 - Friday
Please plan to arrive at the Hotel Roosevelt between 3-6 pm for check-in. We will have a group dinner at the Public Kitchen and Bar located within the Hotel Roosevelt. During the meal, you will have a chance to meet the other attendees on the trip and learn about the trip itinerary.
Day 2 - Saturday
We will be starting with a two day tour of famous sites around Los Angeles. On the first day of activities (Day 2) please meet in the Roosevelt Hotel lobby at 8:30 AM for the hotel pick up and bus assignments. Bring everything you will need for the day, as we will likely not be going back to the hotel until we return around 9:00 PM.
Guided tours of the Hollywood Walk of Fame will take place from 9:00 AM to 10:00 AM. Enjoy exploring and learning about this iconic sidewalk and the celebrities it honors in the form of coral red glittery stars permanently imbedded in brass frames. There are over 2,600 stars to see within 18 blocks of Hollywood! We will not be able to visit every star, so if there is a celebrity you really want to visit, let us know so we can try to accommodate your request.
From here, we will walk over to the Grauman's Chinese Theater. For about 30 minutes, explore the celebrity handprints and footprints pressed into the concrete out front. Keep an eye out for the imprints of the wands used in Harry Potter, the dreadlock of Whoopi Goldberg, the tire mark of Herbie the VW Beatle, and more! After exploring this site for a little, meet back at the busses at 10:30 AM for the start of the driving tour.
The driving tour of Sunset Boulevard and West Hollywood will take us around to some other well known Los Angeles tourist spots. You will have the chance to get out and take a picture with the Hollywood sign in the distance. We will drive by the Chateau Marmot, the Viper Room, The Whiskey a Go Go, Capitol Records and more! Keep an eye out for iconic sites featured in many movies and TV Series!
Lunch will take place at the famous Los Angeles Farmer's Market, located at 3rd and Fairfax. The Farmer's Market is a walkable outdoor market with more than 100 food vendors to chose from. Food options range from American cuisine to an array of international eateries. After eating, feel free to explore The Grove mall adjacent to the Farmer's Market, or hang out in the food stalls to discover the treasures they hold. Be sure to make it back to the busses by 2:00 PM so we can make it to our next activity.
The busses will drop off our group at the top of the Santa Monica Pier around 2:30 PM. You have the choice of how to spend your time in Santa Monica. The pier is a fun place for kids and adults to go on some amusement park style rides and play arcade games. Sit on the beach and relax for a while or walk up and down the 3rd street promenade for some afternoon shopping. The Tongva Park is a beautiful place to hang out or explore. Whatever you chose to do, meet back at the pick up location at 5:30 PM so we can move to our next activity.
We will arrive at Venice Beach around 6:00 PM depending on the state of LA traffic. While here, please walk around and grab some dinner along the two-and-a-half-mile pedestrian promenade or at a restaurant nearby. The promenade is a lively and eccentric place filled with street performers, artists, and various other vendors. Check out Muscle Beach and the shops along the Ocean Front Walk. There are many fascinating art studios to check out, interesting architectural buildings. Spend some time watching the skaters at the skate park. You can also choose to walk around the Venice canals, a neighborhood stylized after the canals in Venice, Italy. After all the fun is had, meet back at the busses at 8:30 PM to catch a ride back to the hotel for a full nights rest.
Day 3 - Sunday
This day will be fun packed so make sure to find time to rest through all the activities. Meeting in the Hotel Roosevelt lobby at 8:30 AM, we will leave as soon as we have the whole group.
The main activity for the day is a trip to the theme park and movie studio park, Universal Studios. Upon arriving at Universal Studios we will be taking a quick group picture at the Universal Globe. Please meet us at the globe at 9:15 AM sharp to be in the picture. After the picture, the park passes will be passed out and you can enter the amusement park. Enjoy yourself by going on rides, seeing shows, or finding a place to sit for people watching. For an interesting history of Universal Studios filming, you may chose to go on the Studio Lot tour. You are also welcome to leave the park and explore Universal Studios Citywalk for some shopping and entertainment themed restaurants. Make sure you have your ticket with you so you can get back into the park.
We will be eating an early dinner before we head to the Hollywood Bowl. At 4:00 PM we have reservations for the whole group to eat at the Hard Rock Café located within the Universal Studios Citywalk. The Hard Rock Café is a family restaurant covered in rock and roll memorabilia. Please inform us of any dietary restrictions you may have ahead of time so that we can accommodate your needs. After dinner please meet at the busses to head to the Hollywood Bowl for a cencert.
The concert at the Hollywood Bowl will feature composer John Williams and his friends, conducting their own movie music, played by the Los Angeles Philharmonic. Music from Star Wars, The Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter, Jaws, Superman, Jurassic Park, The Lion King, Pirates of the Caribbean and more will be played. Have a drink and relax to some catchy show tunes that everyone is sure to enjoy! Meet at the busses at 9:00 PM to get a ride back to the hotel for the night.
Day 4 - Monday
The morning of Day 4 will start at 7:00 AM to allow plenty of time for travel. We will be loading up the busses and leaving at 7:00 AM in the front of the Hotel Roosevelt. For those participating in the scuba diving activities, make sure to bring your mask, fins, snorkels, a bathing suit and a towel. All other gear will be provided for you at the dive shop on Catalina. For non-divers, please bring whatever you will need to explore the island for the day.
When we arrive at the Long Beach Marina, we will pass out tickets for the Catalina Express boat. This boat ride will be about 50 minutes and will bring us directly to the city of Avalon on the island. Keep an eye out for playful dolphins along the way! Upon arriving, you will have about an hour to rent scuba gear before the first dive. The dive shop is located in tour, just 5 minutes from the boat dock. Please go directly there after getting off the boat to insure we have enough time to do all the rentals. Because we are a large group, the dive shop will need to know your height and weight ahead of time. Additionally, we have 4 tour leaders on the trip that are certified dive masters that will be leading the dives. Smaller groups of 9 or 10 divers will be paired with 1 leader for this activity. Divers will be given all of their gear in a bin and asked to try it all on to insure that the fit is good. Each diver will be given two tanks and will be expected to fill one of them for the 3rd dive of the day.
Non-divers will get off the boat and will have about an hour of free time. From here, meet at the Island Tour Plaza for the start of the bison tour at 10:00 AM. The bison tour is a 2 hour driving tour of the island to a location on the island with a population of bison. These bison are not native to the island, rather they were brought here for a movie shoot in 1924 for the silent film version of Zane Grey's The Vanishing America. The film crew brought 14 adult bison to the island and upon finishing the film, left the animals behind. A lack of genetic diversity within the population was noticed and a group of about 60 males were added to help the issue. This population of about 150 American Bison is the most western population of bison in America. The island temperatures can change quickly, so please dress appropriately and bring layers along. This activity should last until 12:00 PM.
Divers will meet at the Avalon Theater and Casino after getting their gear. The first dive will start at 10:00 AM and will last about 30 minutes. During the dive you can expect to see bright orange Garabaldi fish, gray Giant Sea Bass, kelpfish, thick Giant Kelp forests and much more marine life. Keep an eye out for sea lions, seals, bat rays, sharks, and bright purple and orange nudibranchs. This site is a Marine Conservation Area, meaning that it is "unlawful to injure, damage, take or possess any living, geologic, or cultural marine resource" for any reason. Before we eat lunch, we will do two dives for 30 minutes each. When we are finished with the second dive, make sure to get one of the two tanks filled at the dive shop. There is a $10 dollar fee for tank refils.
Lunch will take place at the Bluewater Avalon restaurant located on the beach. With a stunning view of the bay, enjoy a burger or a local grilled halibut. If you are diving in the afternoon, please refrain from consuming any alcoholic beverages during lunch. After eating, take a walk around the town or sit on the beach for a bit.
The third dive will start around 3:00 PM at the same spot. Again, this dive will be about 30 minutes long. After each dive we will give you time to fill out your dive books and discuss the wildlife you saw. After this final dive, load up your gear onto the gear truck and walk yourself back to the dive shop. Here you will help the dive shop unload the gear and return what you rented. Please do not leave until you have returned everything.
For non-divers, you have the option of what to do in the afternoon. You can go on a self-guided hike or join us for a tour of the Wrigley's Botanical Garden. One of our tour leaders will take a group up to the botanical garden along a scenic road into the hills. To get up to the garden, you will be walking about 1.5 miles. Please inform us if you will need a ride to and from the gardens. The Wrigley Memorial and Botanic Garden was created as a memorial to William Wrigley Jr., an American chewing gum industrialist. Many of the plants found here are California island endemics, meaning they exist no where else in the world but the Channel Islands of California. Spend some time exploring the 37 acres of gardens or take an additional hike off some trails around the garden. Make sure to leave time to walk back to the boat dock by 5:00 PM.
The Catalina Express will leave the dock at 5:00 PM and we will return to the mainland around 5:50 PM. When we get back we will have our final group dinner at the BO-beau kitchen and roof tap restaurant. Sit back and enjoy the unique décor and friend staff. Play a board game or have a drink at the bar while you wait.
After dinner, we will load up the busses one last time and drive back to the Hotel Roosevelt. After saying goodbye, you are done for the evening.
